Throughout 2019, Waka Kotahi partnered with councils across New Zealand to help them through the planning, delivery and monitoring of Innovating Street projects.
A lot was achieved and learned through the hard work of teams at councils and the support of local politicians and senior managers. Case studies were developed from those projects, and learnings from them informed support options for project teams during April–June 2020.
The case studies listed below also include projects from across New Zealand that were completed prior to the Innovating Streets programme. These are profiled here because of their alignment with the outcomes and approaches sought by Streets for People projects.
Auckland Council identified the Sale Street intersection as an opportunity for change in their early tactical urbanism work, and have worked with partners to address a series of issues.
‘Here comes the sun’ was a one-day ‘play street’ event held on the street outside the gate of Pt. Chevalier’s school.
Auckland Transport is piloting a new approach to making streets around schools safer through a process of co-design with school communities. Safe School Streets’ vision is improved real and perceived safety of streets near school entrances for all road users, increased active travel to school, and reduced congestion on the network.
The High Street District in Auckland is recognised and valued as an area with distinctive heritage character. Its shops, cafés, restaurants and bars, character offices and residential conversions make great use of historical building stock and streets, lanes and squares, creating enjoyable places to be.
Hutt City Council is activating Andrews Ave as part of their CBD development programme and in advance of the longer term RiverLink development.
The Octagon is an important part of the Dunedin city centre and the council wanted to gain a general understanding of how the Octagon could function and connect with the George St development within the wider transport network.
New Plymouth District Council is progressing with two potential case studies as part of the programme. Making streets safer for children and developing their main street to support a thriving town centre.
Palmerston North is working on several innovations to advance safer streets and to enable a more active community.
Healthy Families Lower Hutt and Hutt City Council are planning to transform some of their suburban street environments this spring and summer to encourage more walking, cycling, and play.
