Cancelling the driver licence of a family member

If you want to cancel the driver licence of a family member because they are deceased, please call us on 0800 822 422.

Data-matching with Births, Deaths and Marriages

The NZ Transport Agency is responsible for administering and maintaining the national driver licence register. Part of keeping the national driver licence register up-to-date involves cancelling the licence record when a driver is deceased.

To assist the Transport Agency, the Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages may notify us when a driver is deceased. This is provided for under Section 78A of the Births, Deaths, Marriages, and Relationships Registration Act 1995.

When the Transport Agency receives notification from the Registrar-General, we may write to the estate of those drivers seeking confirmation. This is to help ensure the correct licence record is cancelled.

Where a driver believes their licence record has been cancelled in error, or where the estate of a driver has any concerns, they should contact us as soon as possible toll-free on 0800 822 422 or write to us at:
